theDefenestrationStation:
What Are Pokemorphs?
So, you've wandered into the Defenestration Station for the very first time, and come across this section labeled "Poketa". Not knowing exactly what it is, you click around, confusion and fear filling your heart, until suddenly it hits you--my God... the characters of Poketa are pokemon...!
But then, they aren't really pokemon either.
The coined term for this type of fandom is 'pokemorphing': giving pokemon human features and characteristics. It's not at all unlike its parent, anthropomorphing, which turns normal and real animals into humans in the same way. For fantastic examples of anthropomorphing, you can go to the Vixen Controlled Library or Yerf. But for now, I'm going to tell you more about this freaky pokemorphing thing.
I have no idea who started it first. A lot of credit has been given to Cassandra Gibbs, webmaster of the new pokemorph site Poketa. But, to be honest with you, I'd been 'pokemorphing' in isolation for a few months before I met Cass. The first I'd tried was to draw a pikachu girl.. ^^; Since I hadn't really known what a pikachu looked like, the result was, erm, interesting.
Have I frightened you yet?
The pokemorphing fandom, contrary to what I had believed at the end of last year, has really grown quite quickly. At least half of the regularly posting artists on the VCL are pokemorph artists. And no, they're not all under the age of ten. =P Most of them are older than me, actually. (*pokes Yasmin and laughs at her youngness*) Pokemorphing seems to be appealing to a wide variety of ages and interests. Pokemon ain't just for little kids anymore!
Although no one's been keeping real straight records, I think it's safe to believe that all 151 original pokemon have been morphed in some way. Even the abstract ones with no arms or legs (like Electrode and Muk.. what can I say, we've got some really creative artists..) We've even moved into the 150 all-new pokemon, from the Gold and Silver games due to come out this summer. (If, at this point, you're saying 'HEY! I wanna see what these new pokemon look like!', you can click here to see it.. thanks to Ailiyah and her site Mewtopia for this picture!)
If you'd like to see pokemorphs by artists other than my sorry self, then please check out my REAL pokemorphing site, Pokemorphs Anonymous for a huge list of the pokemorphing artists I am currently aware of.
